The following 13 Cavy Breeds are recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA).

Abyssinian

Rough coat cavy with harsh texture and rosettes. Show Abyssinians should have 4 saddles rosettes, 2 hip, and 2 rump rosettes. Ideally, the Aby should also have 2 shoulder rosettes.

Abyssinian Satin

Same attributes as the Abyssinian but has a lustrous sheen to the coat.

American

The breed that almost everyone recognizes as a guinea pig. Short, smooth coat in a variety of colours.

American Satin

Same attributes as the American, but has a lustrous sheen to the coat.

Coronet

Long hair breed (hair grows on average, 1 inch per month) with a distinct rosette (crest) on the head.  No other rosettes on the body.  In North America - to be shown with a mane, flowing on top of the back.

Peruvian

Long hair breed with rosettes (preferably two on the rump for a nice coat growth pattern; however, no limitation to # in the Standard). Peruvians have a "frontal" (head furnishings) that flow over the head.

Peruvian Satin

Same attributes as the Peruvian, but has a lustrous sheen to the coat.

Silkie

Long hair breed (hair grows on average, 1 inch per month) with NO rosettes.  In North America - to be shown with a mane, flowing on top of the back.

Silkie Satin

Same attributes as the Silkie, but has a lustrous sheen to the coat.

Teddy

Rough coated cavy with a coat that is erect and resilient to touch. Coat grows to approximately, 3/4" in length and remains as such (no additional growth in length).

Teddy Satin

Same attributes as the Teddy, but has a lustrous sheen to the coat.

Texel

Long hair breed with distinct ringlets and curls. Short, cobby body compared to the rest of the long haired breeds.

White Crested

Smooth coated breed in a variety of colours.  Has a distinct white crest on the forehead.

The Ontario Cavy Club recognizes the above 13 breeds and in addition, recognize the following:

Boucle (Alpaca)

Long hair breed with distinct ringlets and curls. Has a distinct frontal (head furnishings).  Curly coat version of the Peruvian.

Crested

Smooth coated breed in a variety of colours.  Crest not limited to being white, as in the breed recognized by ARBA.  For example, a Self White Crested (all white cavy) can be shown in this breed (refer to gallery photo).

Satin Crested

Same attributes as the Crested, but has a lustrous sheen to the coat.

Merino

Long hair breed with distinct ringlets and curls. Has a distinct rosette (crest) on the forehead.
